Seventeen year cicadas:

Seventeen-year cicadas spend nearly their entire lives underground, emerging for a mere few weeks of adulthood -- each of the adults seen here is seventeen years old. These cicadas emerge en masse over a period of a few weeks in late spring, and none emerge during intervening sixteen years. At the height of an emergence there may be as many as XXX cicadas per acre.
