Farm house being overgrown by forest, Vermont, USA. This home was abandoned decades ago. As the house slowly decays, the forest around grows up and ever closer. Forests in New England are quite resilient in this manner. Walk away from a farm, and when you return decades later it will be a forest. Not all forests recover so easily, however. Some deforested areas, especially in the tropics, reach a new steady state that does not look at all like the original forest.
