Nutmeg and mace. Two different spices come from this fruit. Nutmeg is the dried inner part of the seed. It is surrounded by a red lacy network (called an aril), which is used to produce mace. The spice mace has no relation to the synthetic compound used in riot control sprays. The nutmeg tree is a tropical evergreen native to a very small area: the Banda Islands of the Moluccas (eastern Indonesia).
