Caterpillar feeding on leaf, Costa Rica. Tropical rainforests contain vast quantities of plant matter, much of it in the form of leaves. They also contain vast numbers of herbivores trying to eat those leaves. Plants have evolved a range of methods to avoid herbivory, including gummy saps, hairs, tough leaves, and chemical defenses. This caterpillar, however, has not been deterred from eating this particular leaf.
