Recently harvested hay in a northern Wisconsin field. This sunny afternoon epitomizes the capture of solar energy and its transformation into chemical energy. This field of grass captured some of the sun's energy over the course of the summer, and the individual grass plants stored that energy as sugars and structural compounds. Humans then harvest that stored energy and later use bacteria to transform the hay into silage and eventually cattle flesh or milk.
