Water Treatment Plant, Deer Island, Boston, Massachusetts. When a few people live together, their waste water doesn?t make much of an impact on the ecosystems where they live. But when millions of people live together, the volume of waste they generate is enormous, as is the impact of that waste on the surrounding ecosystems. For a number of years, the ecological condition of Boston Harbor became more and more degraded, until the construction of the Deer Island treatment plant. According to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, the plant handles waste from 2 million people in 43 cities and towns, and it can handle up to 1.27 billion gallons (about 4 million cubic meters) of waste in a day.
